Wine of the Week - 2006 Burrowing Owl Pinot Noir

This Pinot Noir is a true heartbreaker. Not because the grapes were hard to grow but because you can't buy it anywhere. Maybe in this sense Burrowing Owl is the heartbreak winery. I picked up a few bottles of the PN at the winery this summer and drank them all within a couple weeks. I know, no discipline. My favourite uncle was kind enough to share a bottle of his last night and it made me want more. But won't be back in the nogen any time soon. Actually I lied. the wine shop at 25th and Oak had a small allocation recently but sold-out in a day. There may be a few other shops in town, but otherwise you'll have to got to the winery or pay a 200% mark-up in a restaurant. Anyway, it's awesome. Here's the official tasting note:

Displays lifted aromas of ripe cherries, and a complex mixture of vanilla, toast, spice, and leathery notes. On the palate the wine has a vibrant expression of ripe cherries and strawberries followed by forest berry flavors. It has beautiful balance and a lovely, smooth mouth-feel with soft approachable tannins. This wine personifies elegance and finesse.

Drink alone or pair with any food that is worthy of its greatness.

Wine of the Week - Wither Hills 2008 Sauvignon Blanc

Wither Hills is the best Sauvignon Blanc I've ever had. That's coming from a girl who drinks a lot of sb. It's from a small winery in Marlborough, New Zealand, obs. If you like Sauvignon Blanc and you don't like this one, I will give you your money back (just kidding). Here's the tasting note from the winery:

The 2008 Wither Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc shows benchmark characteristics; intense gooseberry, tomato leaf and capsicum characters underpinned by the classically pungent melon, guava and passionfruit aromatics. The palate is extraordinarily balanced with bright seamless acidity, concentration of brambly, mineral lemongrass flavours and a long supple finish. A wine of remarkable intensity.

I would suggest a food pairing but it's so good you almost don't need food! But if you do I'd suggest sushi, salmon, halibut, ahi tuna, roast chicken or a light summer salad or pasta.

It's available at most BCLDB stores for $19.99. Enjoy!
